Gussie's Story . . .

Original:   “After he and the resident dogs get back from running and swimming at the farm, Gus is happy to curl up and sleep with his canine pals.”

When the work schedule of his Maryland owners intensified, Gussie found himself spending more and more time alone at home.  His owners realized that they were not able to give their Field Spaniel the attention and exercise that he craved, so they contacted MAESSR for assistance in rehoming their sweet boy.   Now, he is in a foster home with two other dogs and a farm where he can run free and swim in the creek.  All of this suits this fieldie very well!

Friendly and well-behaved, Gus loves being with people and reportedly has behaved nicely with a ten year old and even a toddler.  He lived with a small dog in his previous home and clearly enjoys the company of other dogs.  After he and the resident dogs get back from running and swimming at the farm, Gus is happy to curl up and sleep with his canine pals.  He has not lived with cats but does not have a strong prey drive often ignoring squirrels and birds.

Housetrained and totally reliable, Gussie has been accident free in his foster home,  He listens well and stays on the property, coming when called.  Even without a fence around the yard, Gussie does not venture far.  He is a boy who needs exercise and loves to run and swim with the resident dogs.  Not one who likes being crated, he does well just being with the resident dogs inside when his foster parents are out.  His previous owners said Gussie becomes destructive if confined to a small space.  This gentle boy will only bark if another dog initiates barking.  Good boy, Gussie!

Although Gussie has had no formal obedience training, he knows basic commands and does not jump on people.  He pulls a little on the leash as he likes a fast pace when he walks.  Inside, he does not counter-surf or guard his food.  Gus did not get on furniture nor sleep on the bed with his original owner; however, he has picked up some of these behaviors at his foster home by watching the resident dogs. He sleeps on the floor next to the bed at night and occasionally his foster parents find him on the bed with the other dogs in the morning.  He does fine at the groomer and her foster mom has trimmed some of the fur around his feet without any issues.  Gus is also a fine passenger in the car.

In his original home, Gussie had chewed on his hind leg.  His vet thought he did this out of boredom and the stress of being left alone all day.  Now that Gussie is happily occupied with running and playing with his dog friends, his leg has been healing nicely.  Having a dog friend to play with will be essential to keeping Gussie happy in his forever home.    Gussie would do well with a family that has other dogs as he does not like to be alone.  He loves his people and would always be near them, usually sleeping with another dog.  Exercise is a must for this Field Spaniel or he will chew on himself.

Do you like company when jogging or do you like to take long walks?  If so, Gussie is the boy for you since he loves being outside with his people.
