    Gunnar's Story . . .
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Original:
“Gunnar is sweet boy who is guaranteed to steal your heart and become a devoted member of any family.”

Gunnar’s story before he was discovered by MAESSR in a shelter in North Carolina is unknown although he is in great health and is as loving and undemanding as can be.  MAESSR stepped in to give this sweet boy a new chance at a wonderful life.

A helpful volunteer must have cut the mats from Gunnar’s ears at the shelter because he arrived at his foster home sporting a very interesting haircut. He was very patient with his foster mom as she evened out those Springer ears leaving them short overall for now.  He has also been very patient with his foster family when he gets drops in his ears and, after a couple of couch days, has quickly recovered from his neutering.

Gunnie is currently has the run of ten acres on a small farm with a female lab mix and two cats.  He is absolutely one of the sweetest dogs his family has ever had the pleasure of fostering. For such a young boy, he has the very calm, sweet disposition of a much older dog and a wonderful energy level--always ready to go but not overly active.  He is a gentle boy whose beautiful full tail is always wagging.  This love is also on the small side, weighing only 35 pounds full grown which in Gunnar’s opinion (and his foster mom’s) makes him the perfect snuggle partner.

Gunnar is quite the Velcro Springer and loves nothing more than to shadow his foster parents.  Whether it is housework or outside work, Gunnar is up for everything.  He has become his foster dad’s constant gardening buddy.  He is reliable out in the yard off leash and does not wander far from his foster parents. He does love exploring all the new areas but comes quickly when called.  Not much bird dog is seen in this Springer boy; he will even sit quietly outside the fenced chicken yard and watch the chickens while waiting for his foster parents. He doesn’t bother the songbirds.

This youngster seems to have been an outdoor dog in his former life. He didn’t know any basic commands but quickly figured out the couch was the comfiest place in the house despite his foster parents’ efforts to teach him otherwise.  He is doing well learning to live indoors.  He caught onto housetraining very quickly and did not had any accidents after the first day or two. Gunnar is learning “here” and “down” with ease.  He has no issues with his meals or treats.  He takes his time with his meals and will allow the resident dog to nose her way into his meal if his foster parents aren’t watching.

Handsome sleeps in a crate at night. He will whine a few minutes but once all the lights are out signaling bedtime, he  settles down for the night without a peep. His foster parents crate him some of the time when they are gone but he has also been allowed free run of the house for short periods with no problems. Gunnar’s foster dad works from home so he is loose all day until bedtime.  He does not get the least bit anxious when his foster parents go into an area of the house where he is not permitted but waits quietly or heads for his favorite spot in the house, the couch.

Gunnar gets along with and loves everyone he meets including other dogs and the resident cats. He will jump on people gently for attention but his foster parents are working on this. He will also put his feet up on the counters to check out what is going on. A Springer might miss some good treats if he doesn’t do that!!

This happy fellow did wonderfully at the vet’s office and several other dog friendly stops around town. He rides well in the car and walks nicely on a leash with no pulling when that is the activity of the moment.

Gunnar is sweet boy who is guaranteed to steal the hearts of all he meets and become a devoted member of any family. He would love a forever home where he can follow his people around and spend some high quality snuggle time on the couch.  Gunnar would do well in a basic obedience course as he loves to please his people and would benefit from learning more basic commands.  What a good time his furever family will have with him!!
